Used to live there!

topic posted Mon, January 19, 2004 - 2:22 AM by  Kathy
Hello! I lived at the Grand Canyon's Village twice and miss it more than anything. I love the Ravens and the forest there and the suprize snow falls in April! I love hiking down to the bottom. I can't wait to go back! I'm glad there is a Tribe for this. Hope more people join. Especially people who lived and worked there as well.

    Heya,
Glad you joined. I am still here at the Canyon. Came here in May of 2002 just for the summer. Kinda hung around a bit longer. When and where did you work here?

I worked there in 1995 and came back in 1998. I want to go back another season too. I almost worked at Phantom Ranch but became pregnant and moved back to Kentucky. I'm in Portland oregon now and HATE it. I miss Arizona so much. There was something about that Grand Canyon that I loved so much and changed my life. I hiked down as much as I could and hiked alone through the forest with those silly ravens a lot. I sure miss it. I worked at the El Tovar as a server. I'm jealous of you! hee hee

Dave, Please take the time to stop and visit the canyon. Sit in the forest near the rim and listen and wait for the ravens!!! A very special experience. You'll know what I mean. In the mean time....pick me up an application while you're at it! ha ha ha ah

Heh, I love to watch the ravens running around the dock eating bits of this and that. Me and a friend of mine argue all the time about them. She hates them because they wake her up almost every morning. She has a room right near one of the porches at Colter, says they hang around there making all kinds of racket.

I lived at Coulter too and my room was the corner room upstairs (East Side) ....I knocked out the screen on the window and nailed a bagel on the outside and those ravens would sit in the Ponderosa trees nearby and swoop down to eat it. I could hear their wings flapping when I was barely awake. I have a tribe here called "Raven". ....if people here like ravens. kathy

There is snow on the ground now. Snowed all day yesterday. We seem to get a week of spring like weather, mid to upper 50's. But with the sun beating down seems warmer. Then we get 2-3 days of freezing weather and snow. I wish we would get one really good snow and it would hang around. I'm talking feet.

I'm living in Colter hall, sucks but it's right next to work, which is why I havent moved out.

I also lived in Coulter. I had a room there in 95 on the 2nd floor in a corner room facing the railroad tracks. I liked it. In 98 I had a room on 1st floor right under the room I had in 95! I just ran right to the El Tovar to work! I was late even when I lived RIGHT next door! (sometimes)
When I was there in 95 there was a snow storm but like you said...it only lasts so long and then there is a sunny day and melts all that snow!
When I was there in 98..a friend of mine jumped off into the canyon! I'm not kidding either! She left her Harley Davidson bike and life in the village and split. I"m sure there are people there who remember. There are so many weird deaths there. There is a weirdness in the Canyon that I sense every time I go there. I would love to work there again though. I can't wait to move back down to Arizona so I can visit the canyon again!

I forgot...ALSO my beloved friend, Chris Munk got killed there too. Except not right in the canyon itself. He was in the forest driving fast and an elk ran out in front of thier truck and killed him and another girl from my home town, Louisville,....it was weird. The day after..I remember the ravens cawking all day and following me to the post office on that dirt trail. I'll never forget it.

                      Hi!,

I used to live in the Park in '95' and '96. I worked in Fire for the NPS. I enjoyed it, but sometimes I got sick of "the fish bowl and had to escape to Flag. I now live in Flagstaff.

I used to work there too. At Bright Angel trans desk. I was only there for 3 months because basically they didn't want to deal with an employee with a disability. I had identified myself as someone with a disability when they hired me, and told them I may need to go to part time schedule, and asked what documentation I needed. They said I didn't need any. BUt then the high altitude started making me have seizures (I woke up being put on a helicopter once, on my way to Flagstaff ER. Not fun). When I requested a part time schedule, they told me they would not accomodate me, and they chose to fire me instead. I didn't even need housing. Yes it is illegal, but since they had everyone sign the "at will" employee thing when they hire you, they can get away with it.

I loved living there. I was living with someone I was dating, who also lived there. He was assistant front desk manager at Maswik, and I worked at trans desk at Bright Angel. Officially I lived at Colter, but I never slept one night there. I just kept extra stuff there. This was 2001. The company was still called AmFac back then. I think I still have some AmFac pens around somewhere too.

Lived and worked on the South Rim from February -to November of 1995. Loved it and it was a turning point in my life for many reasons. Such a wonderous place.

Kathy, I'm writing a novel about a young woman living at GCV for the summer. She is staying at Colter Hall. I was just there, but did not get around to gaining access, as the dorm is private residences. Can you describe (off list is fine) the housing a bit? Number of stories (it looked to be two, but I'm not certain, how many rooms to a floor, how many women to a room, etc. Details like whether the women are provided dressers or footlockers, anything like that would be helpful. You could even describe the bathroom accomodations and if you had a picture, even better.

It would be fine to contact me directly at angelalazear@sbcglobal.net. I have to say I too, was changed by my visit to this magical and mystical place. The ravens are amazing (who knew they were so BIG?) and I will probably write them into a chapter or two, as a I got fond of watching their antics.

Thanks for whatever help you are willing to provide. ~ angela
